For those of you in the United States, I hope you’re having a very happy Thanksgiving.
Not too long ago I wrote to you underscoring the reasons I’m bullish on Mexico and the Western Hemisphere. And, in spite of the concerns swirling over the Euro debt crisis and the U.S. Supercommittee’s inability to take action to rein in U.S. debt and spending, there’s still some reason for optimism, and it can be found right here in our hemisphere.
The latest reports out of Mexico show an economy 4.5 percent larger than a year ago. And, in a nod to a positive trend in the long-term structural dynamics of the country, the rise of the middle class in Mexico shows great promise and potential. Council on Foreign Relations’ fellow Shannon K. O’Neil has written and spoken extensively on this topic in recent weeks, and I think she’s spot on in her assessment.
As we head into the holiday season, politics is starting to drive many conversations both in the United States and Mexico.
In Mexico's presidential campaign, it's the PRI's candidate for president, former State of Mexico Governor Enrique Peña Nieto, creating the most buzz. During his visit to New York City at a talk sponsored by the Americas Society / Council of the Americas, Governor Peña Nieto laid out his vision for the political and economic future of his country. Peña Nieto also emphasized energy development in Mexico in an interview with Bloomberg that I found particularly interesting.
Earlier This week Gov. Nieto’s primary obstacle to the PRI nomination, Senate Leader Manlio Fabio Beltrones, announced his decision not to seek the PRI nomination, Gov. Nieto now appears to have a clear path to the nomination of his party.
And, while the PRI appears well positioned for the 2012 election, the leftist PRD and the incumbent PAN aren’t going to concede anything. Former Mexico City mayor and presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador - AMLO – is back as the standard bearer for the left after losing the 2006 election by a razor thin margin. And, Josefina Vazquez Mota, Santiago Creel and Ernesto Cordero, each having their own political pedigree to be recognized, are all vying for the PAN's nomination.
From here in my office in Mexico City, there’s plenty of news to share, as well. Our team at White & Case has notched some impressive credentials and accolades recently with the Financial Times recognizing White & Case as one of five “stand out” firms in the energy sector. The Financial Times also ranked White & Case among the top-15 most innovative law firms in the United States.
Whether you’re in Mexico or the U.S., I hope you won’t hesitate to call on my colleagues and me at White & Case or Vianovo for our help and expertise in establishing or expanding your own business ventures here. And, of course, I hope you’ll follow me online via Twitter, on Facebook, or connect on LinkedIn.
Sincerely,
